The modern era owes its development to the rapidly evolving technologies. For the last four decades, technology and privacy protection travelled a common path. Knowing the functioning of technologies and their potential use is key to better implement the appropriate measures to comply with data protection principles. AI technologies represent a challenge to mankind and will be decisive for its future. We just have to ensure that the outcome is positive and beneficial for all of us. Protecting personal data and privacy of individuals is essential to guarantee other fundamental rights.
The present roundtable session is organised by the Bulgarian Commission for Personal Data Protection and by the Portuguese Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados. Its main objective is to present the vast AI topic from different angles including public and private sector, academia as well as international organisations. The use of technology may only constitute a threat if the risks for the fundamental rights are not identified in advance and properly mitigated. Technology may be also an opportunity for enhancing privacy.
