Mark Toomey

Since 1977, Mark Toomey has helped business leaders take advantage of technology. As a very senior management consultant, he gained extensive experience of advanced banking technologies before becoming Chief Architect for a major bank. After serving his industry penance solving a critical Year 2000 problem for a top ten Australian company, he refocused on Governance of IT and became the global lead for adoption of ISO 38500 as the standard for governance of information technology. Mark is well known on the global stage for his insightful and entertaining presentations and publications on the application of ISO 38500. His book, Waltzing with the Elephant, available in English and Spanish, is regarded as a most comprehensive and accessible resource for business leaders and technologists alike.

In 2017 Mark founded Australia’s Digital Leadership Institute, which helps business and government leaders build the competence and confidence they need to lead their organisations into a digital future. He leads the DLI’s research, thought leadership and education efforts. More recently, Mark joined an international thought leadership team developing the broad agenda for further evolution of standards in governance of technology enabled change. In this context, he is advocating a change of mindset, to govern the evolution of business capability, as this is the context in which technology is always deployed.
