Hazleen holds a PhD in Software Engineering and has more than 20 years of experience in academia. Apart from teaching and supervision, she has been actively involved in research and development activities in the domain of computer science and information technology, particularly in the areas of software engineering, energy informatics, crowdsourcing and science and STEM education, both at national and international levels, with numerous research publications in her areas of expertise. Aris served as the director of a research institute that focuses on informatics and computing in energy, where energy data integration and governance was one of the research thrusts.

She is also a certified Professional Technologist with the Malaysia Board of Technologists and a certified Engineer with the Saudi Council of Engineers. Specifically in the field of electronic governance, she had led a research project in collaboration with and funded by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission that aimed at identifying the gaps and proposing recommendations for future digital development policies for Malaysia with respect to the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025.
